As the future technology of electrical smart grids become more dominant there is also an emerging market for batteries. In the future of smart grids they will become more reliant on technologies such as solar wind and energy. Lithium Ion batteries will also be used in this area. This is because these smart grids often generate surplus electrical power that can then be stored and delivered as needed.
Lithium ion batteries have limitations in that other material such as silicon can store more energy. However it would be easier to integrate them with existing technologies as the manufacturing process is more established for using lithium batteries in such an integration. Today lithium batteries are commonly found in everything from laptop computers to hybrid cars, the market for them being almost 6 billion per year.
